Safe Blood for Africa Foundation

The Safe Blood for Africa™ Foundation (SBFA) is a not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) Delaware corporation founded in 1999 by current CEO Jeff Busch to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS throughout Sub-Saharan Africa by building a safe and adequate blood supply throughout the continent.  SBFA is achieving its goal of helping to safeguard the blood supply in the 34 countries comprising Sub-Saharan Africa where contamination from infectious diseases, including HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are most prevalent.

Through a multi-year, stepped implementation plan, the Safe Blood for Africa™ Foundation seeks to save an estimated 20 million lives in the next 10 years.  To achieve this goal SBFA has to establish the facilities and train the professionals needed to manage, track and test the millions of blood transfusions performed in Sub-Saharan Africa, country-by-country. The strategy for doing so is as follows:

  • Educate Africans in every aspect of transfusion medicine through the African Institute for Transfusion Medicine
  • Build, equip and staff labs and donor centers
  • Institute Safe Blood practices
  • Help manage each country's blood services until it can successfully manage them on its own.
